What sort of Internet connection do you need
to view the videos?
You definitely need a broadband connection. Most video entries have links for
three different streaming video files, with each targeted to users with
different types of connection:
-
High-bandwidth: For users with very fast wired connections; for example faculty
and students on a high-speed campus network, or users on dedicated RoadRunner
or Verizon FiOS connections.
-
Regular Broadband: For users with broadband connections that may not be
somewhat bandwidth challenged. This includes DSL connections, shared broadband
connections(e.g., Roadrunner Business Class), and wireless broadband
connections.
-
Mobile: A relatively low-speed version of targeted for mobile users connecting
through Verizon EV/DO or similar wireless broadband services.
Whatever your connection, if you do
experience freeze frame viewing, just click on an encoding that is targeted at
a lower bit-rate until you find a suitable encoding.
Please note, our high-definition
videos are often encoded at a higher bit-rate than other videos.
Can I view the videos over wireless
connections? Wireless wifi network
results will depend on whether you've got a strong signal, which type of
wireless transmission standard you're using (there are three 802.11 transmssion
protocols that offer from 11 to 54 million bits per second), and how many other
users are sharing the access point with you.
If you have a 2.5G or 3G Internet
service from your cell phone provider, you should be able to view the videos
that are encoded for Mobile users at 250 Kbps.
We recommend a fast wired
connection for best results (see above).
What sort of computer hardware do you need to
view these videos?
Macintosh or PCs will both work, in general. However, some older
computers may not have the processor horsepower or the video card capability to
playback the video in smooth clear full motion.
What software do I need to view the videos?
All videos are encoded for the Windows Media player. On a PC, you can
download the latest player, if you don’t already have it, at
http://microsoft.com/windowsmedia.
Some Macintosh users may need to install Flip4Mac from
http://www.flip4mac.com.
How do I view the videos in full-screen mode?
Many of our videos are suitable for full-screen viewing at higher bit-rates. In
the Windows Media player you can go to the View menu and select Full Screen; or
simply right-click on the video while it's playing and select the option to
display in full-screen mode.
Is there a way I can watch on my TV instead
of my desktop or notebook computer?
Many of today's desktop and notebook computers have a video out jack
for sending analog or digital video signals(S-video, component, RGB, or DVI) to
an analog TV or large screen digital display device. There are also wireless
technologies that can move video signals around your home to analog and digital
TV devices.
Can I upload my own videos?
You sure can! We are always looking for new individual contributors and
organizations who have community-based content they want to share. Please
Contact us, and let us know what videos you would like to share.
